A first edition of the unusual Historical Miscellany by William Cooke Taylor written before his more famous historical works. William Cooke Taylor, 1800 - 1849, was an Irish writer, journalist, historian and Anti-Corn Law propagandist. He is best known for his historical, economist works. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, Taylor moved to London in 1829, contributing to journals such as The Athenaeum, of which he became deputy editor. He published profusely throughout his career, writing on religion, history and a number of biographies, most notably that of Sir Robert Peel. Illustrated with a folding map towards the front of the volume. In a full calf binding with gilt lettering. Externally, a trifle rubbed. The rear board is detached, and the front board is held by one cord only and could possibly detach in the post, even after careful packaging. Rubbing to the spine, joint and extremities, resulting in a small amount of loss to the leather. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age toned, with the occasional marks and the odd instance of foxing.
