Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Illustrated Edition. Wood-engravings and tailpieces within the text. Original mauve blindstamped cloth, spines neatly laid down, titled in gilt on the spines, new endpapers. Neat ownership signature. A very good bright set. Earlier editions respectively had about 131 figures of birds, 119 tailpieces and 101 figures of birds,136 tailpieces, this contains more and is an attempt at a definitive edition by Robert and Jane Bewick. It introduces nineteen new vignettes, one new figure of a bird 'Bewick's Swan' - thought to be TB's finest wood-engraving. The arrangement of the text varies from previous editions. Finally, this is the first and only edition to carry John Hancock's 'Synopsis' and is sometimes called 'Hancock's edition' from the revisions he supplied. Despite all this, it proved a very slow seller and the 1,500 sets printed were not declared out-of-print by Longmans until 1882. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 13433

The books remains stable, square and useable. Some light edition pencil notes to ffeps.** Newcastle, England ARTIST Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), son of a tenant farmer, indifferent student but natural artist, engaged his creativity during various wanderings along the River Tyne, in Scotland, in fishing outings, farm chores and other outdoor pursuits as a young man to gather the sketches and watercolors which later formed the basis of the wood engraved illustrations in these two volumes. When his former apprentice-master, Ralph Beilby became his business partner in 1777, Bewick was employed in the daily grind of various copper engraving, leaving evenings and scrag ends of his day to pursue his boxwood carving passion project. By 1797, Bewick would have the blocks to complete what he saw as his book for youth and older amateur natural historians fond of learning about the beasts and birds, and Ralph Beilby had supplied most of the text. In swift succession editions were sold out, and then tweaked for improvement, resulting in the "variant" texts referred to below. **VOLUME I, "LAND BIRDS" (Roscoe15e) "Price 10 s. 6d. in Boards." Contains the title page and advertisement for the Fourth Edition of Quadrupeds. There are 140 descriptions of birds, 117 figures of birds, and 91 vignettes, tailpieces etc. Text corrections at p. iv, and image modification of the Magpie at p. 75, identify this as the second state which was titled 1797, but issued in 1798, in a print run of 750 copies. (See Roscoe, p. 52.) Additionally, another 22 described land birds are written up in the included 1821 Supplement, (Roscoe 27c,) with 20 additional illustrations. Thus, Collation Land Birds: [2], [i-title], (blank ) [iii], iv-xxx pp., [1, half title,] (blank), [1], 2-335 pp., plus [1 ad], [Bound with] "A Supplement to the History of British Birds, Part I." demy 8vo, dated 1821, [1, supplement title a], (blank), [1, supplement title b], 2- 46, [2 pp., Contents to the supplement, and ad]. **VOLUME II, "WATER BIRDS" (Roscoe 17d, First edition, second state, variant with 1804 dated title page. "Price 12 s. in Boards." Features 144 desciptions of water birds, 101 engraved illustrations of birds and 136 vignettes and footers. Points on the variant include image p.136, text and (no) image at p.174, and text at p. 176 (Particulars at Roscoe, pp. 68-70.) Thus, Volume II Collation: [1], [i-iii], iv- xx, (advert dated 1804, introduction, Vol. II contents,) [1]-400pp. [Bound with] "A Supplement to the History of British Birds," Part II (Water Birds), demy 8vo, The Supplement is dated 1821on the title page and contains an additional 24 descriptions of water birds in the index, as well as 18 engravings of birds, and at 43pp. thus accords with Roscoe 27c, a First Edition of the Water Birds Supplement dated 1821. (See Roscoe page 104.) REF: Roscoe, Thomas Bewick, A Bibliography ( Folkstone & London: Dawson's of London, 1972). Note: These bindings are also consistent with our listing by the same authors, our no. 9397, "A General History of Quadrupeds." DNB. T. Bewick, I. Bain (edit.) "My Life" (London: Folio Society, 1981.) A lovely set. Newcastle, Printed by Sol. Hodgson, for Beilby & Bewick . and C. G. & J. Robinson, 1797 (Per il primo volume) e Newcastle, Printed by Edward Walker for T. Bewick, 1804 (per il secondo volume). First edition of volume II, second edition of volume I, both demy octavo issues and attractively bound. Bewick's exquisitely engraved illustrations of British birds established his reputation as one of the country's best engravers and are widely considered to be his finest work. Bewick's books were six years in the making and eventually published to even greater acclaim than the Quadrupeds of 1790. "Apart from the excellence of the principal figures, the numerous tailpiece vignettes that enlivened every spare space in the book came in for special notice. Apart from lovingly observed landscape settings, the narrative content of many of Bewick's tailpieces is often ironic and displays a mordant view of the world and human folly. Any comparison of Bewick's work with that of his predecessors makes clear how original it appeared at the time. Not only was there truth in outline and animated posture, but the habitat was beautifully realized" (ODNB). Volume II is in Roscoe's Variant F, with the vignettes on pages 136, 269, and 369 in the second state, the text at pp. 174 and 176 running to 22 and 13 lines, and the vignette showing a man and a woman crossing a moor in a storm at page 176. Roscoe 15e & 17d. 2 vols, octavo (198 x 126 mm). Wood-engraved title vignettes, illustrations, and tailpieces by Bewick throughout. Late 19th-century red hard-grain morocco, spines with raised bands, gilt lettering and decoration in compartments, elaborate gilt border to covers, gilt fleurons at corners, board edges and turn-ins ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. 20th-century armorial bookplate of British collector W. T. Wiggins-Davies on front pastedowns, his library shelf labels on front free endpapers. Extremities sometime retouched with colour, inner hinges of vol. I split (front hinge and gutter of first blank repaired with tape), inner hinges of vol. II cracked, but sound, short closed tear to one leaf, intermittent foxing or light marks, else generally clean. A just about very good set. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 168808

An attractive mixed set of the second edition of "Land Birds", with the first edition of "Water Birds" and the second edition of the "Supplements", dated 1821 but published in October 1822. Though never formally taught, Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) showed a talent for drawing from an early age. In 1767, when he was 14, he was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, an engraver in Newcastle. In 1775 Bewick received a premium from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce and became a partner in Beilby's workshop the following year. "A General History of Quadrupeds" was his first publication and appeared in 1790. By the late 18th century, the woodblock was the poor relation to steel or copper engravings. Bewick, unlike his predecessors, would carve in harder woods, notably boxwood, against the grain, using fine tools normally favoured by metal engravers. This proved to be far superior, and in so doing Bewick revolutionised the printing of illustrations using wood and brought the medium back to life and popularity. The success of "A General History of Quadrupeds" encouraged Bewick to begin working on his most famous work "History of British Birds". Issued in two volumes, the "History and Description of Land Birds" appeared in 1797, the volume devoted to water birds seven years later, in 1804. It was to be his tour de force with respect both to craftsmanship and creative imagination, and the work for which he will always be remembered. This time confining himself to only British species, he drew from live birds, specimens shot for him, or even from birds kept in his Newcastle garden for the express purpose of drawing them. Although criticised by some ornithologists for their lack of accuracy, his drawings nevertheless manage to seize the individual characters of the various birds. In addition, the work once again drew acclaim and was renowned for the many humorous and elaborate vignettes and tailpieces that so vividly capture English rural life. "Land Birds" features 140 descriptions of birds, 117 figures and 91 vignettes and tailpieces. Bewick's teacher Ralph Beilby (1744-1817) was an English engraver, working chiefly on silver and copper. As he had done for "A General History of Quadrupeds", Beilby once again wrote the descriptions for "British Birds", although by the time the second volume appeared Bewick had bought Beilby's s.
