A rare first edition of this classic work on lepidoptery. Plainly bound in brown buckram with gilt lettering to spine. Edges are bumped and the boards are lightly stained. Pages are age tanned with occasional slight foxing. 71 beautiful coloured engravings, which are in remarkably good condition. Water damage to rear, staining one double page engraving, on collecting equipment for butterfly hunting, fortunately the only one not hand coloured. 4to. This is a uniform binding with Morris's other great works: A Natural History of the Nests and Eggs of British Birds (3 volume set)and A History of British Birds (6 volumes) which we have in stock. Attractive ownership label pasted to fep and manuscript list of lepidoptera in the Natural History Museum at South Kensington dated 1889 in ink to prelim. Covers lightly worn and bumped at extremities with chips and losses to top and bottom of spine. Spine sunned and faded. Binding intact but becoming fragile at gatherings. Small 4to. hardback in original publisher's dark green cloth, decorative gilt to spine and upper board and blind-stamped decoration to boards. 168pp., illustrated with 71 tissue-guarded colour plates (all present), plus 30pp. appendix on assembling and displaying a collection, illustrated with with 2 b/w plates at end. A clean copy with no previous owners' markings or inscriptions. Occasional light foxing and handling marks but mostly clean and bright. A couple of gathers a little loose but binding generally firm. Damage to spine with some loss to centre portion, top and base (please see photos). Otherwise a Good, Sound Copy with all plates present.
