[KINCAID, ALEXANDER]. The History of Edinburgh, from the Earliest Accounts to the Present Time; by way of Guide to the City and Suburbs. To Which is Annexed, a Gazetteer of the County. Embellished with a Plan of the Town and Suburbs; as also a Map of the Environs, the Radius Eleven Miles East, South, and West. Edinburgh: Printed for the Author; and Sold by N. R. Cheyne, Bookseller, St Andrew's Street, New Town. MDCCLXXXVII. [1787]. FIRST EDITION. Leather-bound; hardcover; duodecimo (18 x 12 x 3 cm); pp. vi, [2], 336, [59]. English text. Handsomely bound in contemporary speckled calf; smooth spine with gilt bands and red morocco lettering-piece; two folding engraved maps; printed footnotes; rear index. Condition: VERY GOOD. Collated complete. Binding tight and secure, the hinges and joints intact. Slight abrasions to covers. Textblock well-preserved, some very light toning, the maps excellent, and without previous ownership markings. An attractive copy and scarce thus. Notes: Rare first edition of this significant 18th-century work documenting the City of Edinburgh’s development.
