Very good copy in 17th century full calf, spine gilt, ends of spine a little worn. Early ownership inscriptions of Thos. Benet and Eliz. Benet on front free end-paper. Title page is inscribed "Rhodd. I. Morgan i Yscol Llanbedr". The History of Philosophy was the magnus opus of the metaphysical poet Thomas Stanley, the first two volumes being published in 1655/56. This third volume of 1660 contains five parts - Italian, Heraclitian, Eleatick, Sceptick & Epicurean Sects. Each has a separate title page dated 1659 although the general title is dated 1660. The nine striking portraits are of Pythagoras, Empedocles, Archytas, Heraclitus, Xenophanes, Democritus, Pyrrho, Timon & Epicurus. This third volume appears to be scarcer that the first two volumes.
