Condition: VERY GOOD+ ANTIQUARIAN CONDITION! In burgundy, full, straight-grained morocco that has been the Bible s binding since two years past its publication for nearly 200 years. Elaborately blindtooled and ornately gilt decorated and lettered by hand with Peter Bourne, Esq/Mayor of London/1825 tooled in gilt on top cover along with finely detailed Christian iconography. Centered and tooled in gilt is a raised triangle with the Hebrew word for God, symbolizing God is at the center of all and above all else. The backstrip is laid down, spine with four broad raised bands featuring compartments with amazing blindtooled design work. All edges richly gilt. Period and stunning gilt decorated blue silk endpapers, elaborate gilt inner dentelles. Sewn-in satin ribbon placeholder. High quality paper. This is a master class in antiquarian early 19th century fine binding and craftsmanship! Stunning! PROVENANCE Peter Bourne (1783-1846) former mayor of Liverpool PETER BOURNE OF HACKINSALL was born on 13 October 1783, the fourth and youngest son of Cornelius Bourne and Ann Rymer. These Bournes were a Lancashire family. Peter's grandfather, John, came from Stalmine, about eight miles from Blackpool, and his father, Cornelius was married and buried in Liverpool. Peter married on 14 May 1810, at St George's Church Liverpool, Margaret Drinkwater, youngest daughter of James Drinkwater and Elinor Leece. James Drinkwater was mayor of Liverpool in 1810, the same year that his daughter married. His son, Sir George Drinkwater, Margaret's brother, was also mayor of Liverpool, in 1829. Peter, a JP and an alderman and mayor of Liverpool, died on 3 February 1846. There is a memorial to him in Stalmine church: Sacred to the Memory of Peter Bourne Esquire of Hackensall Hall and Liverpool for many years an active Magistrate of the County He died the IIIth of February M.D.CCCXLVI in the LXIIrd year of his age also of Margaret wife of the above (Daughter of James & Elinor Drinkwater) who died XIIth May MDCCCLXV aged LXXVIII years Condition: VERY GOOD+ overall - an exceptional grade for a 200-year-old massive folio Bible. Restored binding with a square spine and firm reinforced hinges and joints, wear to the boards which has created a lovely patina from handling, some scuffs to lower board and corners bumped, some sunning to the red and dulling to the gilt. Endpaper joints neatly renewed. Contents firmly bound and in very good condition on the whole, generally clean if lightly toned, some foxing, finger marks and creasing round the early leaves, 2 leaves of the final appendix at rear ragged and with portions torn away with loss. The majority of the text block is quite clean and still white. A few bent corners. No writing, bookplates or stamps.
