Holy Living was originally published in 1650; this copy is of the twenty-eight edition and published in 1810. Holy Dying was first published in 1651; this copy is of the twenty-seventh edition and published in 1808. Each volume contains the crown bookplate of Harriot, Duchess of St. Albans, Stratton Street Library, on the front pastedown, with the armorial bookplate of Sidney A. Kirkman tipped onto the front free endpaper. Holy Living also has a short biography of the Duchess, also known as Harriet Mellon, tipped onto the front free endpaper. Apparently, the Duchess was an English actress of Irish descent, with the stage name of Lydia Languish. Her title was obtained through her second marriage, to the ninth Duke of St. Albans. Full marbled calf leather with red spine labels. Holy Living: xx,378p., [ii], front cover detached, with some wear to the extremities; otherwise a very clean copy with effectively no foxing, and no noted chips, tears or markings. Holy Dying: xv, [v], 438p., [ii], very similar condition except that it appears that the front cover may have been expertly reattached at some point in its existence. . Hard Cover. Bound in full leather with gilt-lettered red leather spine label, and tooled border to front and back boards. Leather shows significant red rot, cracking along rear joint, and chipping along head of spine and along edges. Text block has moderate age toning to edges and pages throughout interiorly, the ownership inscriptions of several previous owners (all in 18th-century hands) appearing on the title pages, the dedication page (for Holy Living), and in the margin of the fold out plate. Ex libris of Dr. Ronald Paulson, formerly professor of English literature at Yale and Johns Hopkins, a leading authority on William Hogarth, and the author of twenty-three works on English literary and art history.Fold-out plate appears at front, prefacing engraved title page, with archival repairs to edges. A second fold-out plate appears prefacing page 1 of Holy Living. An engraved title prefaces the title page of Holy Dying. It appears that both works were issued together. Front blank endpaper partially detached. Cracked front inner hinge, but soundly bound. Text is in very good condition throughout. Bright and clean with images presenting well. A nice example of an 18th century text. Text in English.
