A wonderfully illustrated first edition copy on the life of Hugh Thomson, written by M. H. Spielmann and Walter Jerrold, in the original publisher's cloth binding with a prize book plate from the Hinckley Grammar School. First Edition.In the original cloth binding, with a prize binding illustration to the front board from the Hinckley Grammar School.Illustrated with illustrated paste downs and endpapers by Hugh Thomson, as well as a colour frontispiece, eleven colour plates, sixteen black-and-white plates, and ninety-three in-text illustrations by Thomson and other artists.This is a biographical work on the life of Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) the Irish illustrator who is well-known for his pen-and-ink illustrations within works by Dickens, Austin, and Barrie. His most famous illustrations within Mrs. Gaskell's 'Cranford' inspired the naming of his 'Cranford School' of Illustration.Contents include 'Early Years in Ireland', 'The Jane Austen Novels', 'Shakespeare and Sheridan and Barrie', and 'The War Years- The End'.Written by M. H. Spielmann and Walter Jerrold.With a prize bookplate to the front endpaper, which reads 'Special Prize for Art Given by the Governors to Patricia ---- July 1934'.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Light wear to the extremities and the spine, particularly to the head of spine, with light fading to the spine and the margins of boards. Prize bookplate to verso of front endpaper.
