Original blue-green cloth lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. With author s symbol in gilt on front cover and publisher s windmill device in blind on back cover. Some minor rubbing to cloth along top and bottom of spine and hinges. Cloth lightly soiled. A small split in cloth along back hinge. Toning to endpapers. Bottom edges uncut. Some minor soiling to top edges and fore-edge of text block. Stull a very good copy. "The English edition of this novel was printed from stereotype plates made from the American type, with a re-set title page also set in America" (Toole Stott). Toole Stott notes that "some copies contain a 16 pp. insert of advertisements, with no significance for the issue." "The novel is generally agreed to be Maugham's masterpiece and to be strongly autobiographical in nature, although he stated, 'This is a novel, not an autobiography; though much in it is autobiographical, more is pure invention.'
