Artikelbeschreibung vom Verkäufer

First edition thus, first trade edition illustrated by Rockwell Kent. Hardcover, no dust jacket. EDITION: First Edition Thus. The first one-volume Random House trade edition, printed by the Lakeside Press for R.R. Donnelley and Sons. Copyright page reads "Copyright 1930 by R.R. Donnelley and Sons Company." No subsequent printing statement present, consistent with first printing. PUBLISHER: Random House, New York, 1930 CONDITION: Dust Jacket: Not present Book: Good. Black cloth boards show heavy surface scuffing and wear throughout. Cloth fraying at crown of spine. Silver-stamped lettering and whale illustration on boards and spine remain readable though worn. Top edge tanned with cloth fraying at headband. Pages uniformly tanned as expected for a 96-year-old volume. Text and all Rockwell Kent illustrations clean and legible. Binding tight and square. Bears a large, dramatic autograph-style signature in dark marker on the front free endpaper; provenance unknown, unverified, sold as described. When Random House published this edition in 1930, they were so taken with Rockwell Kent's bold Art Deco woodcut-style illustrations that they left Melville's name off the covers entirely, billing the illustrator above the author on both the cloth and spine. It was a landmark moment in 20th-century book design and one of the editions credited with rescuing Moby Dick from decades of obscurity. The 280 illustrations remain among the most striking visual interpretations of any American novel. Shipped with care via USPS Media Mail with tracking.

Shop-Beschreibung

You're building something specific. Not just a shelf of books: a library with atmosphere. The kind of room that feels like it has a history before you walked into it. The problem is finding the real thing. The vintage market is full of book club editions dressed up as first printings, reprints with no dust jackets, and sellers who grade "Good" when they mean "survived a flood." It's time-consuming, confusing, and easy to overpay. That's where I come in. I'm Rob. I worked in the archive stacks at UW's Suzzallo Library. Gothic reading rooms, stained glass, the kind of place where books feel like they matter. I've been authenticating and grading vintage editions ever since. Now I spend weekends hunting first editions at estate sales across Northern California: literary horror, classic sci-fi, and Gothic fiction from the 1960s–1980s. The books that actually built the Dark Academia aesthetic, not the modern reprints cashing in on it. Every book in my shop has been verified for edition and graded honestly. Sometimes brutally. You'll know exactly what you're getting before it ships. Your order arrives wrapped in tissue paper with a wax seal sticker. Because the details matter, and you're not buying shelf filler. If you're building a library that looks like it belongs in a Victorian study instead of a big-box store, you're in the right place. Browse the collection.
