Bound beautifully in polished calf, a first edition of this fascinating work about hunting to hounds in England. A beautifully bound first edition, in polished calf. Written by Welsh sportsman and sporting writer Charles James Apperley, who published his works under the pseudonym 'Nimrod'. Illustrated with frontispiece, engraved title page, four monochrome plates, nine colour plates of hunt maps and monochrome vignettes throughout, by three renowned sporting illustrators of the period: Alken, 'Wildrake' and Henderson. Collated, complete. Bookplate tipped in to front paste down, from the library of Alfred Acland, a decorated British army colonel. The work includes the memoirs of the Masters of Hounds, Notices of the Crack Riders, and Characteristics of the Hunting Countries of England. In full polished calf, with marbled paper endpapers and edging. Gilt illustrations to spine and dentelles to paste downs. Externally excellent with minor rubbing to the extremities and occasional mark to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with slight age toning.
