Beschreibung
vi, 7-55, [1] pp; 10 plates (including 5 outline plates) Folio. Original boards. New paper spine label, part of which has broken off. Slightly foxed. Small stain in upper blank margin of a few plates. Untrimmed. Very Good. First Edition. "Although a few more reports were published during the next hundred years [after Tyson], it was Tiedemann alone who gave a more detailed account, on monkeys, in his celebrated Icones Simiarum. . . . In monkeys he found the brain shorter, the sulci shallower, and both sulci and gyri far fewer than in the human brain. . . . in monkeys, as also in the ape, he observed greater symmetry and regularity of the convolutional pattern than is generally seen in man" (Meyer, Historial Aspects of Cerebral Anatomy, p. 142). "Tiedemann's book, Icones Cerebri Simiarum . . . contained five plates illustrating the brain of various animals, and the accompanying legends and brief text substantiated the opinion of Gall and Spurzheim that convolutional patterns varied in different orders and within the genera of certain orders" (Clarke & O'Malley, Human Brain and Spinal Cord, p. 395). Copy of Herbert M. Evans (with his bookplate). NOTE about photos: ABEBooks allows only 5 photos. I can send more photos, upon request, showing the binding and the other plates.
