Marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Bound by W. Worsfold of London. Translated into English by Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Earl of Derby. Packer 168. Young 247. The first Murray edition of the Earl of Derby's translation. Young records a George Routledge edition with the Earl of Derby's translation, also published in 1864. A beautifully bound edition of one of the most important and impactful epic poems in the Western canon. The Iliad is a war story that depicts the horrors of battle, and how important or how helpless individuals can be in a global conflict.
