What is striking is the personal delight Halliwell seems to take in the subject matter and the unabashed and continuing penchant - mathematics and sober scholarship notwithstanding - for humor and whimsy." Bookplate of Helena Normanton* on front pastedown endpaper, covers rubbed with small scrapes to boards, top edge duststained, otherwise Good. *Helena Florence Normanton (1882-1957) was the first woman to practise as a barrister (in 1922), and subsequently achieved many other firsts in an outstanding legal career: she was the first female counsel to appear in in the High Court of Justice, the first woman to obtain a divorce for a client, and (along with Rose Heilbron) the first female King s Counsel in England and Wales.
