"Kurt Weitzmann joined Princeton University's Department of Art and Archaeology in 1935 and spent the remainder of his scholarly career there and at the Institute for Advanced Study, where he was a permanent member of the School of Historical Studies. In 1938, he began his long association with Dumbarton Oaks, Harvard University's research center for Byzantine studies, where he presented the paper 'Principals of Byzantine Book Illumination' even before the center was fully established. Always interested in the relationship between text and images, Weitzmann's first major project at Princeton was preparing a corpus of illustrated manuscripts of the Septuagint, in collaboration with his Princeton colleagues Charles Rufus Morey and Albert M. Friend, Jr. His magnum opus in this series, The Byzantine Octateuchs, coauthored with Massimo Bernabo, was published posthumously in 1999. Kurt Weitzmann's book presents a fresh approach to the whole complex of early book illumination. Therefore, the importance of his study cannot be too strongly emphasized. Future research is bound to benefit greatly from it for a variety of reasons. To begin with, Weitzmann is the first to discuss in a systematic and comprehensive manner 'the problem of how miniature and text are related to each other in principle'. By solving essential questions or suggesting possible solutions for them, he opens new vistas to the student of early book illumination. He formulates new terms, which in the precision of their meaning should prove very fruitful tools for an analysis of illustration methods.
