Two uncommon volumes of the 'Index Library' series; examining the wills of Gloucestershire from the years 1541 to 1650 and 1660 to 1800. The monumental 'Index Library' series was begun by W. P. W. Phillimore in 1887 as a private scheme to publish indexes to British public records. The library was taken over the following year by 'The British Record Society'; a learned society that focuses on publishing historic records, and indexes to such records. William Phillimore Watts Phillimore was a renowned English solicitor, genealogist and publisher, who initiated the foundation of the following record publication societies: The Index Library The Scottish Record Series The Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire The Canterbury and York Society The Irish Record Society. The records in both volumes are arranged in chronological and alphabetical order. The 'Calendar of Wills' from 1541 to 1650 was edited by Phillimore and Leland L. Duncan, whilst the 'Calendar of Wills' from 1660 to 1800 was edited by Phillimore and Edward Alexander Fry. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with gilt stamped title and design to front board and spines. Externally excellent, with minor shelf wear to extremities. Bumping to head of spines resulting in small splits to cloth. Fading to spine, volume XII. Hinges slightly strained, but reasonably firm. Internally firmly bound, only slightly strained in places.
