The uncommon first edition of this triple decker novel, written by Susan Ferrier, author of 'Marriage'. The first edition of the work. Uncommon. Bound without half titles. Advertisement to recto of final text leaf of volume three. Written by Susan Edmonstone Ferrier, a Scottish novelist, noted for her detailed accounts of nineteenth century Scottish society. Ferrier wrote three novels, the first of which 'Marriage' was published anonymously in 1810. The work was met with much critical acclaim, with Blackwood going on to offer £1000 for 'Inheritance', her second novel. The works were praised for their ability to combine Scottish life with her sharp views regarding marriage and female education. An uncommon first edition of this important triple decker, offering an insight into Scottish life and evolving views regarding feminist issues. In half calf with marbled boards Externally sound with rubbing. Joints cracked. Hinges strained with cords visible. Internally, binding strained in places with first two leaves of volume one attached by cords only and final two leaves of volume three detached but present.
