Half title + TP + [5] = Acknowledgments + [7] = Contents + [9] = Foreword + 11-179. First Edition. This book has been credited with introducing a new and more integrated approach to the great divide between Wittgenstein's Tractatus (1922) and his monumental later work Philosophical Investigations (1953). As noted by Marconi:Even the image of Wittgenstein that emerges from the literature specifically dedicated to his thought has changed several times, and profoundly, from the Thirties to today… Usually 1959 (An Introduction to Wittgenstein's Tractatus by Elizabeth Anscombe) is the beginning of a different reading of the book from 1922, in which it is less closely associated with neo-positivism and instead is related to the work of Frege and Russell, to which it explicitly refers. Anscombe, benefiting from a long personal custom with Wittgenstein and his explanations of Tractatus, could speak of the book as an episode in his philosophical path, without referring it to other theoretical experiences and emphasizing the influences explicitly recognized by Wittgenstein: in addition to Frege and Russell, and Schopenhauer as well. [Guida a Wittgenstein, 1977]The book grew out of a series of lectures Anscombe gave on the Tractatus at Oxford in 1957-1958. In the publisher's original dust jacket with blue and white designs and lettering to the both panels and the spine. The dust jacket has been trimmed by ¼" top and bottom - leaving a bit of the black cloth binding below showing top and bottom. With the former owner"s neat bookplate to the Damian S. Vallelonga" in blue ink to the mid-section of the half title and added an identical hand written ownership notation - but here in Greek - to the mid-section of the title page. Otherwise a clean, tight and bright copy of this important contribution by Anscombe to a wider and better understanding of the evolution of Wittgenstein's thought.
