Very scarce first edition. Black cloth boards with 24 litho plates. Only very minor spotting and browning - plates are generally in excellent condition with surprisingly no visible tears. Spine is worn with minor cracks at top and bottom but book is tight and square (see photos). Grantham was a pioneer in iron shipbuilding and the plates are of importance historically and quite beautiful. Plates 1,2,3,4,5,6,15,16,18,20 and 21 are on a single page. Plates 8,9,11, and 24 are a double page on facing pages with no binding in between. Plates 7 and 17 fold out just once so that the plate is 14.5" h x 21" w. Plate 10 has multiple folds - 14.5" h x 40" w. Plates 12 and 13 have multiple folds both out and up - 25" high x 34" wide. Plates 14 and 23 fold out and up - 22" h x 23" wide. Plate 19 folds out but not up so 14.5" h x 33" w. Finally Plate 22 is the larges of them all, appropos since it depicts the ship the Leviathan - it has multiple fold outs and is 14.5" high x 53" wide. It seems the book was a limited series as it is numbered #364 on the FFEP. It has a paper label for the Liverpool Library. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers blb01190
