1835. First edition. xx, 376pp. and an engraved frontispiece. In this book the author describes a journey he made from Paris to Marseilles, and on to Italy. As well as writing of the art and history of Italy, the author is principally concerned with Italy's literature and writers, largely of the 16th century. Besides the purely literary notices, there are hasty glances at the progress of the sciences in Italy during the 17th and subsequent century. The last two chapters contain an abstract of the history of the most famous of the early Italian republics, and of the lives of the most celebrated among the Roman Pontiffs; and a Catalogue Raisonne of the most eminent Italian writers is added, by way of appendix. Unfortunately we have no information about the author. The book is bound in contemporary full black leather boards with gold titling and decoration on the spine and a gold stamped emblem on both boards. The case of the book is in very good condition with scuffing to the leather and wear to the gold emblems on the boards. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few marks and stains from finger smudges, etc., and a larger stain near the bottom of page 4. The frontispiece and title-page are soiled with fairly heavy foxing and there is scattered foxing elsewhere within the book. The foxing is mostly light although some pages are more noticeably affected. There is a school or college prize label on the front fixed endpaper. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers gItaly09
