Beschreibung
Green cloth cover.f/p+xv+163, 3 further plates ex-pagination, 16 reproductions of title-pages; slight edge tanning throughout and printed on slightly rough thick paper, this all due to post-war paper-quality and probably common to all copies (certainly the paper quality), otherwise flawless inside and out; unclipped jacket clean but tanned to edges and spine, generally unworn but internally repeaired nick to bottom front and rubbing to top front edge, will add protective sleeve when ordered. One of 650 copies. Ray (1627-1705) was one of the most important of the British proto-scientists of the Scientific Revolution, less well known than Newton, Boyle and Hooke he was crucial in placing natural history, biology, and especially botany on a sound basis, even being the first to define 'species'. His 'Wisdom of God Manifested in the Works of Creation' (1691) went to a 4th edition in his lifetime and a 13th by 1762, being frequently reprinted thereafter, although a great influence on Paley's Creationism it adopts a very strong pro-'natural philosophy' (science) line suggesting the universities downgrade their teaching of Greek and Latin and start teaching physics, chemistry etc instead as much more conducive to understanding the 'wisdom of God'. But I digress. A very acceptable copy of Keynes's classic bibliography. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 012029
