8vo, 19.5x12cm. First edition. The first of three volumes; the second published in 1722, the third ("A Journey through Scotland") in 1723. This volume containing "a Part of Norfolk, where the Author Landed; all Suffolk, Essex, Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire, Middlesex, and the fullest Account of London that ever was given". pp(4),XII,214,XLII with index; page 111 mispaginated 109. Ruled borders at title-page, scattering of headpieces and decorated initial capitals in text. Half-title lightly toned & spotted. Title-page a little toned towards fore-edge, lightly & very sparsely spotted, and faintly dust- & handling-marked. Final page (XLII) of index dust-marked along upper edge and towards upper outer corner. Contents otherwise lightly toned throughout, with sporadic light spotting, and a few creased and/or furled corner tips. Edges of text-block toned, top edge quite deeply so. Contemporary full panelled calf, spine with five lightly raised bands. Original endpapers, engraved armorial bookplate (Gregory Elsley of Mount St. John's Esqr.) on front pastedown. Spine rubbed, missing title-label, and with loss adjacent to hinges and at head and foot. Hinges rubbed; front with lengthy open split from head and short open split from foot, rear with short open splits from head and foot. Both front and rear boards a little bowed, surfaces lightly rubbed. Board edges variably rubbed, with here & there some loss of hide. Both outer corners of front board and upper outer corner of rear worn with loss of hide, lower outer corner of rear a little rubbed & curled; light wear at inner corners of both front and rear. Both front and rear endpapers split along hinges, moderately dust-marked, and adhesive-stained along outer edges of pastedowns and lightly so along outer edges of flyleaves. Owner initials of some age at front flyleaf (with a little ink transference to pastedown) and at verso of half-title. Front board slack, the result of lengthy split along external hinge, split endpaper hinge, and 2 (of 3) broken cords; so requiring care when handling.
