Beschreibung
127 pp (Jan Zizka) + 95 pp ( Gero). 14 x 18 cms. All original superb three quarter leather art decorated binding with four raised bands gilt spine, gilt very bright. This copy with five annotations and dedications by Jirasek, including a postcard dated 12th August 1918 (see two image). This original photograph (see enhanced Image 4, attached) shows the author with two colleagues. These are identified with names and notes on the front free endpaper, adjacent to where the card was originally positioned (see image 3, left of center). We suspect this is related to events In 1917, when he was one of the first to sign "The Manifesto of Czech Writers". This was an important proclamation that supported political efforts to have an independent country for Czechs. On October 28, 1918, Izidor Zahradník and Alois took part in the reading of the Declaration of Czechoslovakia's Independence. December 21, 1918, Alois greeted Tomá? Masaryk with a speech and met with him on many occasions. All annotations and dedications in manuscript are in Czech, which we are unable to read. [Alois Jirásek was a Czech writer, author of historical novels and plays. Jirásek was a high school history teacher in Litomysl and later in Prague until his retirement in 1909. He wrote a series of historical novels imbued with faith in his nation and in progress toward freedom and justice. Wikipedia]. We attach images of the main features of interest. We suspect this item is of Czech national heritage and would hope to see it relocated to a Czech national collection. More information on request with pleasure.
