A matched hardcover set in half leather with five raised bands bearing gilt devices over marbled boards with what we believe to be original robin's-egg-blue endpapers (which will appear a bit darker in our scans), with some of the leather corners having rubbed through. Grade these volumes "very-good-minus," both volumes bearing bookplates of the Bath Public Reference Library to the front pastedowns. Vol. II retains its black leather spine label; while Vol. I has lost its leather spine label, though "Proceedings of the Linnean Society" remains legible to spine of Vol. I as a blind-stamping. All edges trimmed, the page edges now a shiny brown, though top edges exhibit an added violet sheen. In both volumes the text blocks are still firmly bound; no pages or signatures pulling loose nor standing proud. The pages will snap themselves closed, though rear hinge of volume I is open about 1/8th inch, exposing the three binding strings there, and allowing some modest "play" of that rear board. The rare start of these important series. Among the most important zoological contributions are Francis Walker's illustrated catalogues, including new species, of insects (both Dipterous and Homopterous) collected by Alfred Russel Wallace at Singapore and Malacca (in Volume I), and Richard Owen's classification of the mammals, as well as Sclater's work on the geographical distribution of the birds, and on the zoology of New Guinea (these in Volume II.) Volume I here also includes Botany Vol. I (1857) featuring Charles Bunbury on the Botany of Madeira and Teneriffe, Charles Darwin on the Action of Sea-water on the Germination of Seeds, etc. Volume I paginates i-lxiv, 1-182 including Index and 8 B&W plates with drawings of insects (thus ending the zoology section of this volume), then pp. 1-203 including Index identified as Botany Vol. I including Darwin on the action of Sea-water on the Germination of Seeds, Dr. J.D. Hooker on some collections of arctic plants made by various hands during the expeditions in search of Dr. John Franklin, etc.; then the 1859 supplement to Botany Vol. I (detailing the mosses of the East Indies) pp. 1-158 followed by two b&W plates and an Index, numbered pp. 159-171. Our second volume here ("Vol. II") paginates i-lvii; 1-170 followed by two plates illustrating beetles, index 171-176, then Botany Vol. II (1858) 1-190 followed by two botanical plates and in index numbered pp. 191-205.
