Presumed first edition hardcover in maroon cloth boards with dust jacket, black and white frontispiece. Edited with an introduction by Boyd Alexander. Clean, internally unmarked save for owner's inscription to front free endpaper. The surviving manuscript of the diary of noted Gothic novelist William Beckford, once considered the richest commoner in England, among other ignominies. These writings would become the partial basis of his better known 1834 travel memoir Italy, with sketches of Spain and Portugal. Very good in good dust jacket. DJ with small water stains to spine and front fore-edge, as well as toning to spine and fore-edges. Occasional spots to DJ besides. Boards clean and vibrant, gilt titling on spine mildly faded but still with some luster. Frontispiece portrait of Beckford at 21.
