Quarto, xliv, errata, 458 pp. [2] [fine contemporary heraldic stamp]. Frontispiece large folding engraved map, hand-coloured in outline. 'Mr Hearne's Tracts in his two journies for the Discovery of the Copper Mine River' - together Five folding Engraved Maps/Charts and Four folding Engraved Plates on thick paper [light spotting]. Handsomely Bound later half calf, raised bands, gilt, red leather title, over marbled boards, speckled fore-edges. Hearne was sent by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1769 to find a Northwest Passage via Hudson Bay and to explore the country for copper mines which had been reported by the Indians. Hearne reached the Coppermine River in December of 1770 and followed it to the mouth on the Arctic coast. As a result of Hearn's explorations any theory of a western exit was disproved. Much was learned and reported about the Natural History and Indian tribes of the region. Curiously it is the great French explorer La Perouse that we owe the publication of Hearne's narrative, for it was he who discovered the manuscript when he captured Fort Albany on Hudson Bay. After the British recaptured the fort La Perouse insisted on the publication of the manuscript by the Hudson Bay Company, which honoured his request.
