A totally indefensible work that has nonetheless continued to fascinate for the best part of 300 years. The first version was written in 1787 over a period of two weeks while the author was imprisoned in the Bastille, and later in life, when Napoleon ordered the writer of this degrading, awful book be arrested, de Sade was returned to prison where he spent the last 13 years of his life. This is the 1959 re-print in English of the classic early work, published by the Olympia press in Paris. It is in Fine overall condition though with a large crease on the recto.
