The author, (1813 - 1892), was born in Alexandria, in the District of Columbia. He was a poet, critic, painter, Unitarian minister, and Transcendentalist, whose major literary achievement was his translation of Vergil's AENEID. But in an entirely different vein, he is said to have been the first American author to write novel - length works solely for children, particularly those which combined fantasy and adventure, of which KOBBOLTOZO is one.
