Carl "Cork" Arnold, smuggled the manuscript for The Kansas Inferno out of the Kansas State Penitentiary at Lansing in 1906, and had it published under the pseudonym "A Life Prisoner." _____ Preparation of a manuscript while an inmate could only have been accomplished by a resourceful individual._____ The ruse used by Carl Arnold is open to speculation. _____He had been convicted of murder at age 17 and sentenced to hang, but the governor commuted his punishment to life imprisonment. _____ Possibly because of his youth, the warden assigned him to the chaplain's office as a clerk. _____ He probably completed the manuscript for Inferno while performing duties for the chaplain, perhaps with the clergyman's cooperation._____ _______"Presents excellent photographs of the prison, cell house, library, mine, `Main Street', and dining hall. _____ Detailed description of the rules, privileges, and routines of the prison, with an essay on the laughably inadequate school . the precarious position of the chaplain, the shortsightedness and retributive attitudes of most prisoners, the convict labor spoils system. Includes reasoned and mature recommendations for reform." --Suvak 4_____Among the photos is a mugshot of F. Alexander, a black inmate who, according to the caption, was "burned at stake, Leavenworth, Jan. 15 - 1901."______We believe this copy is the first issue binding of this anonymously issued title. _____It features a front cover illustration of a convict in prison stripes and leg irons sitting on a stool, with his head in his hands in despair. _____ This mounted vignette is surrounded by a columnar facade enclosing the preliminary title. _____ Very light edge wear._____We have handled a second issue binding with only by the title and author's name printed in gold. _____ That represented the first appearance of the author's name on the work.
