First American Edition (NAP, 1963). The first English translation was published by Wm. Collins Sons & Co. in England in 1962. The book was first published in France in 1959. What sets this book apart (as best as I can tell from the descriptions and photos of other copies) is its very good condition. Take a look at the photos of the covers. They are perfectly clean. The edges and corners are in very good shape. The spine ends have only a little bit of crinkling. The black lettering on the spine is quite bright, as is the illustration on the front. The page edges are very clean. The book is very solidly bound with nicely tight pages throughout. These pages appear to be perfectly clean. I'm scrolling through without finding any instances of soiling. There is a very, very tiny crease at the tip of a number of bottom corners, quite minor. There are no turned-down corner creases. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The dust jacket has done quite well. You can see it in the first few photos. It has one fairly small tear off the top edge of the rear cover. It has some crinkling at the top edge of the spine. There's the lightest bit of handling soiling, no stains. The flaps look very good as well, very clean, a little toning off the top edges. There are no tears on the flaps, no creases. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket front flap: 'In 'The King Of The Cats', René Guillot tells the unusual story of how Maou became the beloved pet of Anne, daughter of the owner of a French circus which had set up its winter camp on the fringes of the wood where Maou ruled. Vivid scenes of Maou's life in the wood and the conflict with his wily, jealous enemy One Ear, are followed by colorful glimpses of the circus camp where Maou encounters strange animals like Niki, the chimpanzee who tries to walk like a man and Tarkouada, the huge elephant who is afraid of mice. But the heart of the story is Maou's surprising devotion to Anne, reaching its climax when the cat must decide which is stronger-- his loyalty to Anne or his longing to return once more to his own domain, the wood where he was the king of the cats. Writing about a cat for the first time, Mr. Guillot displays the same intuitive understanding of animal psychology that has made his African jungle tales so popular with young readers all over the world. Telling of how he came to write The King of the Cats, Mr. Guillot says, "I love cats, and when I heard a true story of a wild cat which followed a circus around France, it gave me the idea for this novel. Many of my stories center around the love of a boy or girl for an animal, wild or domestic. But this story is different since it takes place in my native France, whereas most of the others are set in Africa or other faraway countries." '. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 002808
