Beschreibung
First impression of the first edition thus - with an eleven-page introduction by his son G. P. Wells. ***Very good in dark forest green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine. Printed on cream antique wove paper. Small surface water mark to top and bottom of front board not affecting pastedowns or interior pages. No foxing. No inscriptions. Spine tight. Black and white frontispiece of H. G. Wells. ***In a very good blue-coloured dustwrapper showing original publisher's price of 30s net. Rear panel shows photographic portrait of H. G. Wells as he shakes his fist at the "vast lumping sycamore" of The Happy Turning, Chapter 8 (picture by Ronald Procter). Edges of dustwrapper creased and rubbed. Small water marks to top edge of front panel of dustwrapper and edge of front jacket foldover, not affecting boards or pages. ***224mm x 142mm. 84 pages including bibliographical notes and index to rear. ***'Many writers and critics have suggested that his last book, Mind at the End of its Tether, is a recantation - a cry of despair - a confession that for half a century he had dreamed and taught in vain. But, in his introduction to this volume, a quite different conclusion is reached by G.P Wells, a son of H. G. Wells and a Professor of Zoology in the University of London. ***The reader will find here the evidence that will allow him to judge for himself. He will find that at least one previous and fruitful source of confusion has been removed. Mind at the End of its Tether (first published in 1945) consisted originally of two separate prophecies joined together, the later prophecy printed before the earlier one. Now for the first item, the two are placed in chronological order, to bring out more clearly the closing stages in the evolution of H. G. Wells' ideas. ***For lighter fare, H. G. Wells' penultimate book, the Happy Turning, is also included - a suite of barbed fantasies originally published a few months before Mind at the End of its Tether.' (Quote from inside front of dustwrapper blurb). ***First impression of the first edition thus, in its original dustwrapper. Uncommon. Of interest to collectors of H. G. Wells titles. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 6331
