Beschreibung
A true first edition, published posthumously in 1926, two years after the author's death, in the original dustwrapper. With a frontispiece facsimile of the last manuscript leaf written from "Legends" by Conrad. ***Very good in green cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine, and an embossed monogram on the front board. The gilt has oxidised over time. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine just very slightly creased. Corners sharp. No bumps. Top of page block stained green by the publisher to match the boards. Page block edges slightly darkened but clean without any foxing. Internally also very good, with no inscriptions or annotations. Pages beautifully clean, without any of the usual foxing. No creases or tears. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good plain printed dustwrapper, priced by the publisher at 7s 6d net on the spine. The dustwrapper is largely complete, but there is a large chip at the top of the spine which has affected the titles. The dustwrapper has become quite brittle due to the paper stock used, and is prone to chipping and tears. The dustwrapper is also darkened overall, and especially on the spine. Very slight rubbing at the edges, with just a sliver of loss at the tail of the spine. No significant creasing, and the large inner flaps are clean and uncreased. ***253 pages. 200mm x 140mm. Contents: Geography and Some Explorers, The "Torrens": A Personal Tribute, Christmas Day at Sea, Ocean Travel, Outside Literature, Legends, The Unlighted Coast, The Dover Patrol, Memorandum on the Scheme for Fitting-Out a Sailing Ship, The Loss of the "Dalgonar", Travel, Stephen Crane, His War Book (A Preface to Stephen Crane's "The Red Badge of Courage"), John Galsworthy, A Glance at Two Books ("The Island Pharisees" by John Galsworthy and "Green Mansions" by W. H. Hudson), Preface to "The Shorter Tales of Joseph Conrad", Cookery (Preface to Jessie Conrad's "A Handbook of Cookery for a Small House"), The Future of Constantinople, The Congo Diary. ***'Most of these twenty essays were written after the publication of "Notes on Life and Letters", and they comprise all Conrad's important miscellaneous writings remaining unpublished or uncollected at the time of death.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'"Last Essays" is a volume of essays by Joseph Conrad, edited with an introduction by Richard Curle, and published posthumously in 1926.' (Wiki) ***A true first edition, in very nice clean condition - scarce to find in its original thin and fragile dustwrapper. Of interest to collectors of antiquarian and first edition Joseph Conrad titles. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 8544
