First Edition, First Issue. The Prtinter's information page noting a print date of "13 Mars 1969" - the first printing of this important work.In this book, Foucault explicates his philosophical method which, after having a seismic impact on the philosophical landscape of the 1960s, remains one of the foremost methodologies in critical theory today. Here, Foucault argues that one can understand intellectual history as having two central aspects: the data itself, and what makes this data meaningful. One can begin to see how an archaeological approach can be used as a useful metaphor: on the one hand, one finds an artifact, and, on the other hand, one finds a specific context that makes this artifact meaningful. This, Foucault argues, is how a researcher in the history of ideas might be able to understand their work and the wider significance of it. Going beyond this, Foucault elevates this basic principle into an elaborate philosophy of language, one that examines utterances and propositions as though they were the artifact, and the socio-lingusitic culture as though they were the artifact's location. All in all, this work presents not just the content of Foucault's rigorous study of the history of ideas, it also explains the structure of his research and the philosophy latent to methodology. In original publisher's white card cover with green and maroon text to front, spine, and back. Light wear to top of text and corners of spine, and light sunning to sine and back cover.
