A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! By Woodrow Wilson. Complete in 5 volumes. Printed in 1902. Bound in the original leather bindings. This is the FIRST EDITION / FIRST PRINTING. ____________ "A NATION WHICH DOES NOT REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS YESTERDAY, DOES NOT KNOW WHAT IT IS TODAY" "Wilson wanted to enhance the presidency by establishing a direct link to the American people. He thought the president, as their spokesman, should be the preeminent leader of the democratic nation. Long convinced that the British parliamentary government was better than the American constitutional system, he exerted personal influence on the legislative branch in unprecedented waysâ ¦The first president to hold regular press conferences, he sought to shape public opinion by managing news from the White House. Moreover, he delivered messages personally to Congress, reviving a practice that George Washington and John Adams had used on a few occasions. From Jefferson through Taft, other U.S. presidents had submitted only written messages" (ANB). As a writer, Wilson "propounded his own frontier thesis to explain American history. Influenced by conversations and correspondence with historian Frederick Jackson Turner, Wilson now credited the frontier, more than the Anglo-Saxon heritage, with the rise of freedom and democracy in the New World" (ANB). "As a lecturer and writer Wilson had a genius for simplification, for the clarification of the complex and the explanation of the relation of things. These qualities he carried into his political speeches and they account in part, at least, for the effect he exercised upon men's minds" (DAB). Illustrated with portraits, maps, plans, facsimiles, rare prints, contemporary views, etc. Bound in leather. Original leather binding from 1902. This set is seldom seen in fine leather. Marbled boards and end-papers. Ornate gilded spine with raised hubs. Top edge gilded. Wide margins. Large books measuring 9 inches tall. Complete in 5 volumes, as stated on title page. Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York and London. 1902. FIRST EDITION. CONDITION: This is a gorgeous antiquarian FIRST EDITION. Complete in 5 volumes. VERY GOOD condition overall, with some gouging to the leather as is shown in the pictures. Internally this set is exceptionally fresh and well preserved. About FINE internally. Two hinges are starting, but held firm. Volume four looks a little chewed at the left base of the spine, not completely visible in the picture, see the final picture. See the final picture as well. Some general rubbing. Bright, crisp interior, particularly fresh. Appears free of foxing. Some pages still uncut. No writing or signs of previous ownership. This is the First Edition. Contains copious plates, maps and in-text illustrations. An elegant set. Each volume contains a frontis protected by tissue. Wilson offers an interesting, comprehensive look at American history. A true pleasure to read. 'Woodrow Wilson's History of the American People explained the Ku Klux Klan of the late 1860s as the natural outgrowth of Reconstruction, a lawless reaction to a lawless period. Wilson noted that the Klan "began to attempt by intimidation what they were not allowed to attempt by the ballot or by any ordered course of public action." Although it is unclear whether Wilson's harsh critique of the Reconstruction was colored by his personal beliefs, it is clear that his critique provided much of the intellectual/historical justification for the racist policies/reactions of the 20th century American South. This set stands out by being bound in the more expensive leather bindings. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 22.08.26.wilson
