This is the FIRST COLLECTED EDITION of Carlyle's works. Printed just 3 years after Carlyle's death. Limited to Only Three Hundred and Seventy-Five Copies With this being #173 , number handwritten. With only 375 sets ever produced, this collection is quite scarce, and difficult to obtain, particularly in such collectible condition. Printed on exceptionally high quality paper. These are a pleasure to read.Each volume contains a frontispiece protected by tissue. A very high quality collection of Carlyle's complete works. The PARCHMENT EDITION.A beautiful set. Bound in full leather bindings. These are white vellum leather bindings. These are genuine leather. Full leather bindings were more expensive to produce and are highly desirable. Illustrated with quality engravings. Bound in full vellum leather of the highest quality. Decorative illustrated design on cover, spine. Top edges are gilded. The edges of the covers are all beveled. Printed on high quality Rag style paper. Bound in genuine vellum (genuine leather bindings.) Thick BEVELED boards. These are large books, measuring 8.25 inches tall. Complete in 20 volumes, all 20 volumes are present. Dana Estes and Charles E. Lauriat, Boston. Printed in 1884. Printed in English. CONDITION: Very Good condition overall with some generalized wear and abrasion and scuffs to the vellum, typical of vellum. FINE & UNREAD Internally. Leather is very fresh and supple. Hinges attached and sound. These are all still very tightly bound and try to close when opened. Main wear is general external rubbing and abrasion. Some of the ink printing on the vellum may be abraded through in areas reminiscent of gouging or scuffs on calf. The front cover of volume eight shows abrasion to and through the ink printing on that cover. The front cover of volume eight shows additional abrasion and rubbing. Exceptionally durable vellum, the types found on books from the 1400's. The vellum is wrapped over thick beveled boards. The white spines and covers show some light dirt, as shown. Possible micro extremity chipping if at all. Bright, clean interior, printed on high quality rag style paper. Practically free of any foxing. Printed on quality rag paper. Internal hinge paper may have some wear in a couple volumes. All hinges are fully and strongly attached. All tightly bound and exceptionally well-preserved. No previous signs of ownership.
