Wallace, a lawyer by training, was a veteran of the Mexican War and the Battle of Buena Vista. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted as a private into the 11th Illinois Infantry and was elected to be its colonel. Rising in rank and responsibility, he commanded a brigade at the Battle of Fort Donelson in 1862. Appointed a Brig. General, he later commanded a division at Shiloh. After holding off rebel assaults for 6 hours at the famed Hornet s Nest along the sunken road, General Wallace was grievously wounded. Retrieved from the battlefield, he was carried to his wife who had arrived the morning of the battle for a surprise visit. She cared for him, taking him back to Grant s headquarters, where after 3 days, he died. This rather scarce work is based on the copious letters and family papers of the general and his wife. Written by Wallace s adopted daughter, this work provides historical information on federal politics of the period, including commentary on Lincoln s campaign and election and on state politics, especially regarding T. Lyle Dickey, Wallace s father-in-law and law partner, prominent Illinois politician, and associate of Lincoln. It is illustrated with fifteen plates. A very nice work by the Lakeside Press.
