624 pages First edition: first state with all points: 1) illustration with Twain bust, urn, and flames on page 441; 2) with caption on page 443 reading "St. Louis Hotel"; and 3) uncorrected "it it" on page 444. Relatively scarce thus. The book is now housed in an unusual custom homemade slipcase covered in suede leather, with a darker leather patch affixed to one board. The patch has an original watercolor sketch of a steamboat. The book is in very good condition: clean and tight; front hinge starting but still holding tightly; bookplates for Harry Leonard and William S. Mobley on front pastedown endpaper; some edgewear on covers; most spine gilding rubbed off but still readable; first blank page has a Christmas 1895 gift inscription to Leonard from his mother.
