this is a delightfully made little manuscript book recording a three day expedition to Guilford and the surrounding countryside by a party of students from Whitelands College, Chelsea in June 1920 a small slim format measuring 5.5 inches by 4inches approx., containing twenty three pages of neatly written very legible text, and accompanied with a photograph and eleven full page captioned drawings The party left from London for Guilford on June 3rd 1920, setting off to Waterloo Station, taking the train through lovely countryside, arriving at their destination, The Adult School Guest House, Old Stoke Rectory Guilford at 3.15pm in the afternoon, then after a brief stop at their lodgings took a long walk up The Pilgrim?s Way over the Greensand Ridge, with descriptions of the sights and nature, visiting the Church of St. Martha-on-the-Hill, with a description of the church, the descent to the main road to Stoke, getting back at 8.30 after an 8 mile walk, on the Friday after breakfast the group walked around Guilford making sketches, visiting the Hospital of the Blessed Trinity of George Abbot with a lengthy description of its interior and exterior illustrated with drawings. Then a visit to St. Mary?s Church in Quarry Street, with a description of the church and its history, accompanied with drawings. In the afternoon the party went on a nature ramble and a visit to Guilford Castle, passing the house where Lewis Carroll author of ?Alice?s Adventures in Wonderland, died, a description of the castle, a walk down Quarry Street, walking along the river Wey, then up Drake hill to St. Catherine?s Chapel, mentioning that John Bunyan is thought to have referenced this place in his ?Pilgrim?s Progress?, from there the students made their way along Pilgrim?s Way to Compton, the home of the Artist George Frederick Watts R.A. being shown round the house by his widow, with descriptions of the paintings seen in the house, and Mrs Watts pottery studio and showroom, the return back via Hog?s Back a ridge of the Chalk Downs, for a meal at Stoke Rectory, with the students singing ?Non Nobis?, the Latin Grace they usually sung in college on Sunday?s. The Saturday involved a long walk after breakfast, walking from Guilford to Dorking via the tops of the Downs and Merrow Down, with a description of the 14 mile walk and then the return to London by Buss arriving back at Whitelanders College at 8.30pm, tired and weary but happy with a trip they will all remember, the account finished with a drawing of the insignia of the college A LOVELY LITTLE MANUSCRIPT BOOK CAPTURING THE EVENTS IN DETAIL OF THIS TRIP TO GUILFORD AND ITS SURROUDINGS OVER 100-YEARS-AGO.
