In the first publication actual exhibitions and art associations are looked at, in the second author notes the artist s social functions, also the meaning attached by Dombrovskis to the term "Modern Latvian art" is demonstrated in the second work, which was imbued with an impeccably conservative spirit. The book is intended for art lovers and focuses only on mature creative individuals of Latvian art and their most notable art achievements since the second half of 19th century, when national creative spirit showed strong expression. People's education attainment raised in this period, interest to the national culture had increased. Among performing arts covered painting which showed most rapid development because of it greater physical impact and easiness of perception, sculpture with slower prosperity by reason of more complication for understanding, graphic art which intensively contributed to the books design especially after establishment of Latvian Republic in 1918, also applied arts which only began to gain prominence, particularly fabrics and ceramics. Author identifies three stages in painting development in referred period: Folk Romanticism with Adams Alksnis and Arturs Baumanis; linkage with Western-European art in creations of Janis Rozentals, Vilhelms Purvitis, Voldemars Zeltins, Peteris Kalve, Rudolfs Perle and others; post-war era and its main representatives Jekabs Kazaks, Konrads Ubans, Voldemars Tone, Romans Suta, Janis Liepins, Uga Skulme etc, separately considered scenery painting in works of Janis Kuga, Eduards Vitols, Ludolfs Liberts, Otis Skulme, Ansis Cirulis and others. Greatly contributed to the development of the graphic art Richard Zarins, Sigismunds Vidbergs, Niklavs Strunke, Indrikis Zeberins and other considered artists.
