Location label and gilt-stamped library name to foot of spine. $300. * First edition. Gilbert was a prolific author, but this is his only work on wills. A well-written work, its scope includes equity rules. The final edition of this work, the fourth, was published in 1792. This copy of the first edition had two Massachusetts owners, Francis Blake [1774-1817] and Levi Lincoln Jr. [1782-1868]. Blake was a prominent attorney who served as a state senator from 1810-1811 and practiced law in Worcester. Lincoln, a lawyer, politician and the 13th governor of Massachusetts, represented the state in Congress from 1834-1841. He also served as Worcester's first mayor and was responsible for much of the city's development. Both men were members of the American Antiquarian Society, and Lincoln likely acquired the volume from Blake upon the latter's death, whether by bequest or a posthumous sale.
