The Introduction notes that the biography is built upon 340 volumes of Layard papers in the Manuscript Room of the British Museum. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound in hardcover format, light brown cloth over boards, brown lettering over burgundy spine label, rubbed a bit, light forward cock to spine, else clean of interior, unmarked, minimal rubbing to extremities. Gordon Waterfield was a British journalist, also a broadcaster and an author of multiple works of social history and travel. Born in 1903, died in 1987, he wrote popularly about Egypt, classical archaeology, Aden and now Layard of Nineveh. Several score sharp and distinct black-and-white illustrations and plates, printed on high-gloss paper, and a map of Layard's travel at book's end. x, 1-535 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
