Lamb was Director of the Leather Dyeing Dept. at Herold's College, Bermondsey, London. He says that this First Edition of his book is the first to treat the dyeing, staining and finishing of leather separately from the preparatory tanning process. Tanned leather is a fairly crude commodity which needs several dressing, or finishing, treatments to add aesthetics and performance features which make it ready for a particular end-use at an affordable price. "It's the finish that sells the goods". These treatments, which involve a mix of chemicals and special machinery, include bleaching, dyeing with natural and organic dyes, colour-matching, softening, suedeing, glazing, polishing, printing, embossing etc. The book aims to lay out the scientific principles of these treatments to help promote the progress of the trade, as far as possible, from a rule of thumb craft to an understood and organised science-based set of procedures - although leather dressing will always partly be an art. It is aimed at leather manufacturers, workmen and students. It contains many plates of machinery, for which machine makers are thanked, photographs of workrooms and operatives and a total of 127 samples of finished leather, most with tissue guards, and all present. There is a dedication to the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers, City of London. Most of the contents of the book were published earlier in the trade press, where it was very well received, as was this book. Title page with photograph of a dyehouse opposite.
