The first and only edition of this book.A remarkable biography of the life William Lethaby, missionary to Kerak in what is now West central Jordan between 1886 and 1894, when he was forced to leave due to Turkish occupation in the region. This book by Thomas Durley recounts of a life filled with incident of an uncommon kind characterised by the missionary life led by this subject.The material was mainly drawn by the many letters kept by his closest friends.With 'recollections' by J. E. Page.Illustrated with a frontispiece and thirty eight plates throughout. Collated with the 'Dog River' facing p. 27 instead of 22, and 'Miss Mary in Eastern Dress' to face 188 instead of 190, lacking 'The plains of Jericho.' In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, and faint soiling to the boards. the spine has slightly faded. Inscribed to the front free endpaper by a previous owner, dated 1928. Internally, firmly bound. With some offsetting to the endpapers, otherwise the pages are generally very clean with only a hint of age toning. Illustrated with a frontispiece and thirty eight plates throughout. Collated with the 'Dog River' facing p. 27 instead of 22, and 'Miss Mary in Eastern Dress' to face 188 instead of 190, lacking 'The plains of Jericho.' Very Good Indeed.
