Natalie Merchant set one of Sigourney s most famous poems, Indian Names, to music for Merchant s 2010 album Leave Your Sleep and Sigourney, Iowa is named for her but she is barely known now. Such is the fate of many extremely popular 19th century writers; it seems particularly true for a certain style of female writers. Here we have the posthumous biography of L.H. Sigourney, known in life as the Sweet Singer of Hartford, she was a poet and a writer of, among other things, two conduct books for young women. She was also noted for her elegiac work, or death literature, particularly at the deaths of young people known to her. This a beautiful copy, 3/4 calf with marbled boards, matching paste-downs and page edges painted to match the marbled work elsewhere. The green leather shows some rubbing and shelf-wear, most notable at bottom. The label is black with gilt, and the spine features other gilt decoration. 414 pages, frontispiece is an engraving by W. G. Jackman from a portrait of Sigourney at age seventy by Wilson; it is tissue guarded. Minimal marks, save a few embossed library markings from the Steep Falls, Maine Library, and two book plates noting it was a gift of Henry Pierce. The Steep Falls Library, also known historically as the Pierce Memorial Library, is a public library in the Steep Falls village in the town of Standish, Maine USA. Built in 1917 and enlarged in 1924, it was a gift to the community of Henry Pierce, a Standish native who made a business fortune in California. The building, a handsome Colonial Revival structure designed by Edward F. Fassett, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.The binding is square and tight; the text block is clean and bright save some foxing in early pages (clear by p. 13, reappears at p 413); otherwise unmarked, clean, sound, attractive copy; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
