Nice, tight first edition of the highly-regarded fifth historical novel set in Virginia in the early 19th century, penned by the noted Virginia novelist and women's rights crusader (1870-1936). This unusual copy extra illustrated: Inner flyleaves bear two facing fine heavy stock steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portraits of the novel's best-known historical figures -- Aaron Burr (at left) and Thomas Jefferson (at right), both undated but superb mid-19th century closeup portraits with facsimile signatures underneath.
