A first edition of this illustrated biographical work on the Duke of Wellington by J. H. Stocqueler, complete in two volumes. First edition, in the publisher's original cloth binding with a pictorial design to the front cover, in gilt.Complete in two volumes. Written by journalist and author Joachim H. Stocqueler, who was known for his interest in military history and in the theatre. This biographical work documents the life of the Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, with chapters on his birth and parentage, famous battles fought such as The Battle of Waterloo, Wellesley's defeat and the French Revolution. With thirty-eight illustrations to volume I and fifty illustrations to volume II. Collated, complete.With a gift inscription to the first blank and half title, from John Anderson to W. G. Armstrong dated September 1865. In the publisher's original cloth binding with a pictorial design to the front cover, in gilt. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Bumping to the extremities and light marks to the boards. Fading to the spine and to the extremities. A little fraying to the cloth at the head of the spine and the head of the front joint of volume II. Hinges are strained to both volumes, with the front hinge failed to volume I. Bookseller label to the front paste down. Internally, binding tender in places, particularly to volume I, with list of illustrations disbound, but present.
