Maxwell's popular account of Victorian military and political figure, Arthur Wellesley, the First Duke of Wellington, famed for his superior defensive tactics in the Napoleonic wars. Starting with the birth, lineage and education of the Duke, Maxwell covers all of his expeditions and battles, until the end of his military career. To the rear of Volume III is an appendix, offering further details on the Napoleonic Wars. Maxwell claimed to have served at the Peninsular campaign and the Battle of Waterloo himself, but this is generally believed to be untrue. As well as this biography, the Irish author also wrote military novels. 8 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of Volume III. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally, sound, apart from Volume III which is disbound, with the binding intact but separate from the textblock. Shelf wear to the boards and extremities, and Volume I and II are bumped to the extremities of their rear boards. Backstrip to Volume I is torn and lifting from the spine. Hinges to Volume I are tender, held by two cords to the rear and one cord to the front. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first and last few pages, and to the plates. Pages 387-398 of Volume II, and pages 481-497 of Volume III, are coming loose, but are intact.
