v, [i], 187, [3]pp., 8vo. Engraved portrait of Bowes, with a terminal page listing "Chirurgical Works written by Jesse Foot." Nice copy in contemporary sheep; expertly rebacked with the original gilt spine. First edition, a very full account of the loathsome Bowes, who insinuated himself into the graces of the widowed Countess of Strathmore, herself no saint, and proceeded both to physically abuse her and to help himself to her money. When she fled, he had her forcibly kidnapped in 1786 and transported to the north of England, where he imprisoned and beat her. Bowes and his accomplices were finally caught and tried, and the countess released. She obtained a divorce in 1789 and lived quietly until her death in 1800. Bowes managed a further ten years of evil ways, and Foot - who knew Bowes well - describes him in this book as "a villain to the back-bone." Thackeray subsequently learned enough of Bowes s story to base a novel s title-character, Barry Lyndon, on him. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 12806
