Beschreibung
203 pages. Illustrated. Noted War-time Interrogator with British Intelligence, who at one time served with the German Army in German South-West Africa, and who later became Chief Officer of the War Crimes Investigation Unit. Alexander Scotland left Scotland for Africa as a young man. Having just missed the South African War, he settled into the grocery business at the town of Ramonsdrift on the border of German South-West Africa. It was there he learned German and made the acquaintance of a German officer of the local garrison. At the invitation of his friend, he served with the German Imperial Army from 1903-7. The knowledge he acquired there would form the basis of his espionage work during the following two world wars. He was arrested in 1914 by the Germans under suspicion of espionage and held in Windhoek for a year until it was liberated by the British. He then went to work as a spy on the Western Front, posing as an overseas German civilian-worker in Belgium. During the interwar, he toured Germany twice, earning an audience with Hitler in 1937. After war broke out again he was assigned with the B.E.F. In France, interrogating German P.O.W.s. He continued his duties from London after being evacuated at Dunkirk. The information he gathered was vital to the prosecution of several high-profile war criminals after the war. (#88). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers SB11293
