First edition, of which just 500 copies were printed. 8vo. 245pp + vi publisher's catalogue at the rear. Linen-backed boards with a paper spine label, which is just fractionally tanned. Bottom- and fore edges untrimmed. Boards just a little rubbed and marked in places, and a tiny hint of toning and spotting to the free endpapers. Title hinge cracked but perfectly sound. Very good indeed. No jacket called for. The author's second book, thirty-two short essays, mostly concerning nature and the countryside, which was never reprinted in its entirety (various revised, altered and illustrated editions would follow, but one story, 'The Outlaw', was omitted from all subsequent editions).
